Choosing a baby book · The Pagewren Journal

Tinybeans alternatives: a shared journal or a book of your own?

The right Tinybeans alternative depends on what you want to change. If relatives need to follow everyday updates, look for invited family access. If you mainly want a personal baby book with photos, words and a PDF you can keep, a different kind of app may fit. Pagewren is our app; it fits that second use and does not replace a shared family feed.

In this guide

Decide what you need to replace

Tinybeans describes a private family journal with individual or batch uploads, memories organized by date, invite-only sharing and photo books made in the app. Those are useful features. Before switching, name the part you need most:

If Tinybeans already does the thing you value, staying can be a sensible choice. A new app does not need to win every column to suit a different recording habit.

Pagewren: a private baby journal you turn into a book

Choose Pagewren if the record is mainly for you and your child. Add photos and your own words when you have something to keep. Age chapters, monthly chapter photos and milestones give the book a structure, and batch photo import helps when the pictures are already on your iPhone.

No account is required, and there are no ads or a social feed. Unlimited photo and text memories, the Classic theme and Classic PDF export are free. Pro adds Linen and Scrapbook themes, more backgrounds, private iCloud Sync across your own devices and Privacy Lock. Your own iCloud sync is not a shared family journal.

Pagewren does not offer shared editing, an ongoing writing-prompt service, or book printing and delivery. It requires an iPhone with iOS 17 or later. If keeping your own book and sending selected pages sounds like your routine, try a Classic book in Pagewren and export a few pages before moving more memories.

BackThen: a child-by-child timeline for invited family

BackThen's App Store listing describes photos, videos and milestones organized by child, with family and friends invited under permissions you set. It also lists Photo Books and prints, and access through iOS, email, web and other mobile platforms.

This is a closer option to investigate when relatives following a timeline is the main reason you use Tinybeans. Check the exact viewer and contributor permissions on the current plan, especially if several people need to upload. The listing does not establish that everyone can edit the same entry.

Qeepsake: questions that help you start writing

Qeepsake sends age-based questions by text and saves your replies in your child's journal. You can also make entries in the app, invite contributors and order hardcover or softcover books.

Qeepsake offers a different recording workflow, but the checked App Store listings name Tinybeans USA Ltd as the seller for both Qeepsake and Tinybeans. Keep that distinction in mind if changing the listed provider is part of your reason for switching.

Consider it if deciding what to write is the main friction. For a wider comparison of prompts, contributions and books, see our Qeepsake alternatives guide. If you prefer to write without incoming questions, the free website prompts can be used whenever you want; they are not built into Pagewren.

When keeping Tinybeans may be the better choice

Keep the existing journal in mind if your invited family already follows it, you like the date-organized record, or you want to keep using its photo book workflow. Pagewren's no-account approach is a different workflow, not evidence that Tinybeans's invited sharing is public.

If a single missing feature is driving the change, confirm it with the provider before rebuilding your journal elsewhere. An export feature not mentioned in an App Store description is unverified here, rather than necessarily unavailable.

Try a small move before moving the whole story

  1. Choose one photo, one written memory and one older entry you care about.
  2. Check the original service's current export or download instructions. Keep the original text and dates with any copies.
  3. Create a small book or journal in the alternative and check whether the result fits the way you want to read and share it.
  4. Open any exported file and review the pictures, dates and words before relying on it as your copy.

Pagewren can import photos from your photo library. It does not import a Tinybeans journal, captions, comments or book layouts directly. Add the words you want to keep yourself. Our catch-up guide can help you start with a few important moments.

Sources and comparison scope

Competitor details were checked against the official U.S. App Store listings on October 27, 2026: Tinybeans, BackThen and Qeepsake. We do not list prices or assume features that the descriptions do not state. Check the current plan, export and delivery details with each provider.
